we are all expert actors in the play of our lives

For Christmas, I asked for a disposable film camera.

I spent the entire month of January slowly taking shots, attempting to do something artful and intentional with photography. I love the old format of film; knowing that I could only take 27 pictures with my little camera made me think more about which moments I wanted to capture. It's a pretty opposite mindset compared to today's document-everything mantra.

Today, I developed the shots at Walgreens and practically cheered when I got them back. It is February, but I am just now seeing pictures I took in late December! This film experiment has encouraged me to keep pursuing photography, despite the plethora of too-dark shots that I took. There were some gems, however! I look forward to sharing them with you.

Life is beautiful. And so are you. Believe it.

+ Have you ever taken film photographs? What do you think of the medium?

  3. you are right to continue with the film! it's nice to photograph well and wait the process ... Then as you say, you have to think before shooting, which give us another approach to the photo! you use what format?

    1. The waiting certainly makes it more special. I looked forward to developing those shots for a month or more! For this shot, I used a plain old disposable camera. Nothing special, but still film! ^_^

  4. OKAY SO HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT YOUR BLOG UNTIL JUST NOW?? SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG WITH THAT. And I'm pretty sure you've commented on my blog before, haven't you? If not, I'm going to sound like I have a REALLY HORRIBLE memory and give myself away (because I kind of do) but oh well. Hi. I'm Abbiee. x)

YOUR BLOG IS GORGEOUS. it's just sooo aesthetically pleasing and makes me want to cuddle it with some tea and toast or something eeeeeep. ♥ love love love. And I have a special place in my heart for film cameras!! They are so cool. Especially the vintage ones. I have an Argus Atronic 35 and it is a lovely little monster. I also really like how you pointed out that you have to really think about what photos you want to snap. Oftentimes, we treat photography the same way we treat real life moments -- not really enjoying them individually. I DON'T EVEN KNOW. I just think that the now needs to be enjoyed more and I think film photography can teach us a lesson about that.

    This is fabulous. Following. ;)

    1. I believe I have commented on your blog before! Hello Abbiee! Nice to meet you. :)

Thank you so much! I just Googled the picture of the Argus, and it looks so cool! Very old-timey; I dig it. And shooting on film definitely can be compared to sinking in and really enjoying life. It makes you think about the special moments more, and really seeing.

      :D

  5. Did you take the photo in this post? I can't wait to see what you captured. I don't know what it is, but most of my favorite photos are those underexposed, moody, grainy shots. So your too-dark is probably my image heaven haha. I've never experimented with film. I have a friend who does film and it's incredible. I love the idea of being more careful about what you shoot, and the way they're more vibrant and need less editing. It seems like such a pure medium.

    1. I did! Well, technically my sister did, haha. We had just gone to this really gnifty record warehouse for the first time, and I wanted a shot. *cue pensive window staring*

I like the grainy shots, too! But there were a lot that were too dark even for me; I'm talking like almost solid grey. I will have to learn about lighting if I keep up film photography. :)

You should try film! Your photos would look so epic on film! And yes, well put: a pure medium. I liked that I didn't have to retry and retake shots over and over. I always lose the authenticity of the moment when I do that. This was a complete experiment!

  6. Film photography is my life, I may say. Of course, I take a lot of digital photos, but only with film I feel really alive. I don't know how it looks in your country, but here developing is pretty expensive, so I don't really do this all the time, cause I run out of money very quickly.
I love the picture you took, for me it's perfect! If you'd be interested in knowing more about for photography, I'll be glad to help. What camera did you get? :)

And yes, Daughter vinyl - I had no idea that they even have vinyl albums, but my mom got me this one and I was all over the moon. :)

    1. Film IS alive! Great way to put it :) And yes, developing is pricey here, too. This was actually the first time I'd gotten my own photos developed. I'm not sure I'm going to make a practice of it, but perhaps every now and then. Though the lady working at the photo counter told me her company was getting rid of their film developing tech in March :( So sad!

Thanks! I don't really know where to go from here; I only used a random 27 shot disposable camera that you get from the grocery store. So nothing fancy! Any ideas or recommendations?

That is so awesome! Daughter is wonderful. I had no clue that they had their music on vinyl, either! ^_^

    2. I can tell you few camera brands really cheap and worth buying: Zenit, Praktica, Pentax and Smiena. Good, old Russian treasures are still in perfect shape after all this time. :) I usually buy online or on some flee markets.

    3. Awesome, thanks for the tip! :D I will have to look for those brands next time I hit up the flea market :)
